Cafe St Honorė

Restaurant | Edinburgh | Scotland | United Kingdom

The "Café St Honoré" in Edinburgh is a charming French bistro, hidden in a cobblestone alley behind Thistle Street in the heart of the New Town. With its Parisian blue facade, elegant white tablecloths, black and white tiled floors, and antique mirrors, it exudes authentic French flair.

Under the leadership of chef Neil Forbes, who was named Scottish "Chef of the Year" in 2011, the restaurant places a strong emphasis on using local, seasonal, and sustainable British ingredients. The daily changing menu reflects the seasons and offers French classics with a Scottish influence.

An example of the culinary creativity of the house is the starter of smoked duck breast from St Bride's, served with an orange salad, pickled fennel, and radicchio. For a main course, slow-cooked lamb shoulder with herbed crust, ratatouille, buttery mashed potatoes, and tapenade could be offered. To finish, a raspberry frangipane tart with Crème Normande entices.

For guests looking for exceptional value, the "Café St Honoré" offers a fixed "Café Classics" menu, available for both lunch and dinner. This menu includes dishes such as smoked cod fillet with steamed spinach and green sauce.

The wine list is predominantly French, offering a selection of wines in various glass sizes. The restaurant is known for its warm and inviting atmosphere, enhanced by attentive staff and an authentic ambiance.

The "Café St Honoré" is a place where attention to detail and dedication to culinary excellence are palpable, making it a favorite for both locals and visitors looking for an authentic French bistro experience in Edinburgh.

We were rushed through our meal to make the table available for the next booking. Food was salty and greasy, and staff were inattentive. Better off going to the Holy Cow! Will not recommend this place!

Mooi restaurant, met een gemoedelijke sfeer en heel vriendelijk personeel. Het eten is erg goed met een goede keuzen aan wijn. Prijs kwaliteit is hier prima. Ligt net van princes st., even zoeken maar zeker de moeite waard.

This is a fantastic, friendly, and unique gem of a restaurant. The food is some of the best i've ever had, and the staff are service-minded and pleasant.

The Restaurant itself is beautiful: great location, tucked away on Thistle Street with intimate interiors that are unabashedly styled after a French Brasserie. Brilliant! Service: Before we came to the restaurant we called up to ask if we could move our booking from 7:45 to 6:30. The restaurant said they could and we rearranged our plans accordingly. They then called a couple of hours later and said they could only give us the original time. Normally this would be fine, but we ended up having to choose between going here/a bar down the road we had changed our booking for, so it wasn’t great on the service front, especially given that they charge for no-shows. Once in the restaurant the staff were lovely and friendly, but at points service was slow with some minor things missed. For example, we asked for more bread which never arrived and they didn’t have any of the wine we ordered. Food: Two of us shared a bottle of wine, and had a starter, main and shared desert. The wine menu is great! Lots of choice and great variety, albeit reasonably expensive for what’s on offer (the lowest priced bottles of red start at around £40). The starters were nice: we had Smoked Mackerel and Ham Hock Terrine. The Mackerel was well smoked and came with a salad to garnish it. The Ham Hock was yum, with crusty bread to seal the deal. A solid start in classic brasserie style. For our mains we had the Duck Breast and the Lambs Leg. The duck was perfectly cooked and simply delicious. The Lambs Leg, however, was lacklustre: it sat in lentils which were a bit clumpy and the Lamb seemed slightly overcooked without any great depth of flavour. Mixed reviews on the mains. For desert we shared the cheese board. There were three cheeses and some oat cakes. The goats cheese was lovely, the hard cheese was relatively basic and the soft cheese was not good. It seemed to had hardened and had a plasticky texture/taste to it. A bit disappointing for an Artisan Cheese Board, especially for a French restaurant! The Price: Total: £170 Wine: £42 Starters: £29 Mains: £69 Desert: £15 Service: £15.50 Altogether, we had a positive experience. The restaurants vibe is amazing, but there is room for improvement in the service and in the food. In the way of price, we thought it was a bit over-priced given a couple of the issues noted above. I probably wouldn’t go again, but am happy to have tried it out.

Service and atmosphere was good. The dessert was great! The starter was okay but the main course was so disappointed. I ordered the beef in their menu. The beef was overcooked that I couldn't cut it or even chew it. You can see in the picture how overcooked it is. This dish was 32 pounds, also the taste of the meat was flat, the potatoes tasted like leftovers. I put 3 stars because the dessert was very nice.

The food here is always fantastic. Locally sourced produce, great wines, and a welcoming atmosphere. A special place as each section of the restaurant feels small and quiet - you can chat and feel like you are in a semi-private dining room. We go often for special occasions as the menu changes daily and with the seasons. Our favourite spot for dinner in Edinburgh.

Maybe I had too much expectations but I felt it was just a solid good restaurant but not a great/very good one The 2 course meal dinner wasn't amazing for the money I paid

I had a delightful meal here like a 2-3 months ago. The fish was perfectly cooked that had crispy on the outside and tender inside, paired beautifully with fresh greens and a buttery sauce that added just the right richness. The ambiance was classic and cozy, with a charming bistro feel. Bread was served warm to be appetizing. adding a nice touch to the experience. Highly recommended for a relaxed yet refined dining experience! Ps. Literally I didn’t expect much because I was followed my idol from Korean group that his name is Joshua from Seventeen to take a photo as him but everything is soooo good! I will be back!!!

Beautiful space, and tasty food but for an average of £ 35 for a main course you are expecting some sort of service. We asked to change our table because we were seated infront of the bar even though the store was empty but the waiter (barely having any customer service skills) refused cause apparently all the tables were booked and selected by their customers. The whole place was empty and as we were leaving a couple walked in,they didnt like their table and the lovely female waitress accommodated them.It took a while for our starters to arrive and overall the service was really bad.I have a feeling that if the female waitress was at the store when we arrived we would have a completely difference experience.

The food was lovely and delicious for my husband. I asked if some of the choices on the menu were ok for pregnant ladies and after going to check with the chef, the waiter was quite vague and not entirely clear about what was safe to eat. I found the game terrine quite dry unfortunately and while the fish was well cooked, the delicious sauce was not well spread around. It took a while to be tended to after the main but the other waiters we had were very pleasant. I had looked forward to dining at Café St Honoré for a while and though my husband was entirely satisfied with the food, I was not always convinced about the full experience.

The starters were good. I think since we were one of the first tables served the terrine was just out of the fridge, and that took away from it a bit. The mains were fantastic. We had the lamb and the beef, both very very good. The desserts were also quite good. The service wasn't bad, but it wasn't exceptionally good either. It felt a little rushed, and there were a lot of little things like not saying what cheeses were on cheese board etc. Being a little harsh on the service because there was a £20 service charge, which I see as a little cheeky. Overall a good meal but maybe not worth the price.

It came highly recommended !! It looks French Right down to the neighbours wheels bins overflowing with food waste and rubbish onto the street in front of the restaurant !! The menu reads well but actually the delivery is frankly a rip off Few slices of beef and bits on a plate as starter followed by Pork Belly in a Cassoulet where the dried our tiny pork slice ( not belly ) was at best a reheat and so small and totally chewy and tasteless And the cod was over cooked and dry !! If this is what reviews are raving about then I am glad we cook and eat at home as £250 for three was a total waste of time and money Be warned - this is not a worthwhile visit when better places exist The previous day The Buttery in Glasgow cost less for three and excelled in every way possible Don’t bother with Cafe do St Honore !! Find better

We were fortunate to eat here on a Sunday so we could enjoy the delicious Sunday roast. What a gem of a space tucked back off the bigger streets, with a nice selection of mostly-French style food and a good selection of wines and other drinks.

What a great find, and by accident! My wife has lived her entire life in Edinburgh and never heard of this wonderful café. Our lunch was exquisite, and the service attentive and friendly. A wee bit on the high end price wise, but worth it. Looking forward to going back for dinner!

Booked for a midweek business lunch. I had a £34 pork stew which was reminiscent of a very poor school dinner, although school dinner stews were usually overly seasoned - the chef here seems to have a allergy to basic seasoning. If we weren't hosting business partners we would have certainly complained during the meal. If you're going to charge £34 for a pork stew, it needs to be exceptional, this was beyond poor - pork was dry, veg was 'fine', gravy gloopy and the whole dish was badly seasoned. Terrible food, would never recommend.

An interesting French-inspired but true to local roots menu. Stepping in we were greeted very kindly, exceptional relaxed service, our waiter had stellar recommendations for wine pairing and was accommodating at every step. The food was delicious, it’s our second time at this restaurant and both times we left impressed. The crème brûlée was a standout as they add flambéed apples to the dish, significantly elevating the flavour of the crème which can be frankly heavy at times. The mains were also outstanding; interesting combination of ingredients and creative preparation. Well recommended.

Great food and service. Lovely, quaint local spot with attention to detail. Ask for Ellen!! Her knowledge is off the charts. If I owned this place I couldn’t pay her enough. She was attentive to everything going on the whole time we dined. The food was delicious as was the wine. Again, Ellen helped the wine pairing selections. The lamb and the terrine were very good. Photos don’t do justice. Cheers

First visit in a while - deeply enjoyable. Dinner on a Monday - main restaurant full, very nice to see. Lovely, good-natured service throughout. Delicious starters (Isle of Wight tomatoes; pickled mackerel) and mains of hake and a stand-out St Brides chicken - a feast of a dish. Great sauce. Lovely chocolate fondant to finish. Nice Chablis and Sauternes with pud. Always a super restaurant to return to.
